A quick Google search reveals the definition of an entrepreneur: a person who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on greater than normal financial risks in order to do so. I’ve always known what an entrepreneur was, but today I was revisited with the gratefulness and value of entrepreneurship. According to the small business survey conducted this year by Guidant Financial, African American small business ownership is up by 400%. The numbers are skyrocketing and I want those who are in need of opportunity to be in on this gold mine.
Growth has always been extremely important to me. Over the past year, that growth has come as a result of challenging myself to improve in my fitness and lifestyle, stretching all limitations and not taking no for an answer. I’ve climbed the corporate ladder from starting as an Administrative Assistant to Director of Sales, but there I stood, unsatisfied. Wasn’t the money good enough? I had the things I needed and wanted. But as the years have passed by, there was always something missing. I needed to figure out how to fulfill me. Punching the clock and being on someone else’s schedule isn’t what I quite had in mind, but there I was.
Launching SGE, has been a beautifully gratifying experience. My vision is no longer trapped and now I can come alive. There is something on the inside of each of us that the world needs. Taking a leap of faith into entrepreneurship has not been easy, but I have not drowned. I once heard that, “You don’t need a degree to own a business, but you do need a degree to work for a business.” Doesn’t this strike you as backwards? What are you missing out on? What dream of yours is off in the distance? Grab it now!
Before you go into a panic about where to start on your entrepreneurship journey, rest-assure it is not as complicated as you may think. It may be unusual or even comical to some, but first you will need to dig deep and self-reflect. What do you love to do? What are you passionate about? There is an audience that needs you and you must trust your unique gifts and strengths. Dig into the value of what you bring to the world and begin to explore the possibilities. Lastly, let go of the fear of stepping into the unknown. This will be a hindrance and blockage to you and your progress. You are fierce. You are worthy. You are ready.
